The name Ngā Ara Whetū, means ‘Star Paths,’ and pays homage to the journeys of those
who have come before us to Aotearoa and symbolizes the aspirations of today’s pathfinders.
As we celebrate Matariki, the Māori New Year, we reflect on our star path. The rise of the
nine whetū (stars) in the Matariki constellation marks this significant time. It is a moment to
consider the health of our environment (te taiao) and the health and wellbeing of everyone in
Aotearoa. Hiwa-i-te-rangi, one of these whetū, holds particular relevance for Ngā Ara Whetū.

Hiwa-i-te-rangi: A Star of Hope and Aspirations

Hiwa-i-te-rangi represents environmental aspirations and actions, urging us to look ahead at
the complex, interconnected issues we face and think about how we can adapt to and
mitigate future risks. ‘Hiwa’ means ‘vigorous of growth,’ and ‘i te rangi’ means ‘in the sky.’ Her
role is to pīata (shine) brightly, and motivate us to step into the unknown, guiding us through
the challenges of environmental stewardship.

Hiwa-i-te-rangi has become a symbol of unity, reminding us of our interconnectedness and
the power of our collective aspirations to shape our lives and the world around us. She
encourages us to work together, fostering personal growth, community bonds, and a deeper
connection to the universe.

At Ngā Ara Whetū, we are committed to honouring the traditions of Matariki, allowing them to
form a foundation to build a brighter, more sustainable future for all.
