The United Nations climate conference, COP29, is currently underway from 11-22 November in Baku, Azerbaijan. Dr. Maria Armoudian, Co-director of Ngā Ara Whetū, questions the choice of Azerbaijan as host country due to its poor human rights record and plans to expand fossil fuel extraction. You can read Dr. Armoudian’s op-ed in The Spinoff.

Dr. Armoudian also discusses the role New Zealand can play at the conference and what can be done domestically. She questions why the New Zealand government is looking to expand the petroleum sector, especially when this year marks the hottest on record for the second year in a row and the warnings from scientists about climate change are becoming a reality with increasingly fierce and frequent storms, floods, fires, and droughts.
